Agent confirms that £20m midfielder may not be joining Nottingham Forest on free

Nottingham Forest appear ready to miss out on bringing Roberto Gagliardini to the Premier League, with the former Inter Milan midfielder opting to stay in Serie A.

Beppe Riso had a hectic day on Tuesday.

The agent of Roberto Gaglardini visited the Inter Milan offices not only to finalize the 29-year-old’s departure from San Siro, but also to discuss a deal in which Sassuolo’s Davide Frattesi will take his position.

A £22 million deal for Frattesi is now ‘very close’ (Football Italia). He will help offset the departures of both Marcelo Brozovic and the aforementioned Gagliardini, the former on his way to Saudi Arabia while the latter bids farewell following the expiration of his contract.

Nottingham Forest, per Gazzetta dello Sport, showed an interest in Gaglardini a few months ago, in the knowledge that the £20 million signing from Atalanta was unlikely to extend his stay at the Champions League finalists.

Gagliardini officially became a free-agent on Saturday.

But, as Riso tells Tuttomercatoweb, the 29-year-old will still be plying his trade in Serie A come 2022/23 with an ambitious Monza outfit hoping to make him their latest high-profile addition.

“We are closing the agreement with Monza. We should be there next week,” Riso says. “He’s going to play in Serie A.”

Riso did, however, rule out a move to Salernitana. Leicester City have also been credited with an interest. But the Foxes completed the signing of former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Harry Winks last week.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest will choose quality over quantity this summer. After all, they invested more over £100 million on roughly 30 new players in 2022/23.

Emmanuel Dennis, Steve Cook, and Jonjo Shelvey might all be replaced. According to The Telegraph, all three are available for transfer.

A new goalkeeper is also a priority, with Dean Henderson the top candidate, with Michele di Gregorio, Ugurcan Cakir, Emil Audero, and Luis Maximiano as potential replacements.
