Leeds United in talk with Manchester City to sign £19m world goalkeeper this summer

Leeds United are apparently among the clubs interested in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, but look poised to lose out to Burnley, with Sky Sports reporting that the England U21 star is closing in on a £19 million move to Burnley.

Trafford, 20, has been a standout for Bolton in the last 18 months. He attracted the limelight after joining the team on loan from City in January 2022, conceding only 58 goals in 74 games. With the League One club, he kept 33 clean sheets.

The goalkeeper has already returned to Manchester City, but his primary emphasis will be on leading England to victory at the U21 European Championships. He’s started all four of England’s games on their way to the semi-finals without allowing a single goal.

So we’re clearly talking about a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. According to the Mail, Leicester, Burnley, and Leeds are all interested in Trafford, who Charlie Cresswell recently praised: “He is a great keeper, and a great guy.”

However, Sky Sports News said that Burnley are closing in on a deal for Trafford worth a significant amount that comprises an initial £12 million charge – plus a potential £7 million in add-ons. Leeds and Leicester just cannot afford it.

Trafford is an exceptional goalie. His accomplishments at the Under-21 European Championships have skyrocketed his value in recent weeks. Leeds and Leicester would have struggled even with the initial cost of £12 million.

A move to Burnley, where he will most certainly be first choice, and the opportunity to play under Vincent Kompany is a wonderful decision for Manchester United. While it is encouraging that Leeds is searching in the correct places, £19 million is far too much right now.
