Coventry City in battle with Millwall to sign 23-year-old Burnley massive defender this summer

Carlton Palmer believes Burnley defender Luke McNally will be allowed to go this summer, despite reports of interest from Millwall and Coventry City.

The Lions have joined the Sky Blues in their pursuit of McNally, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 23-year-old joined the Clarets from Oxford United for a reported fee of £2 million last summer, but his game time has been limited at Turf Moor, and he spent the second half of the season on loan at Coventry, making 22 appearances in all competitions to help Mark Robins’ side to the Championship play-off final, where they were defeated on penalties by Luton Town.

Vincent Kompany is reported to be willing to let McNally leave temporarily again this summer, but while Coventry are anxious to bring him back, Burnley are “not keen.”

The Clarets have had four proposals for Millwall’s Zian Flemming rejected, and McNally might be included in the deal to persuade the Lions to accept a bid for the Dutchman.

What did Carlton Palmer have to say?

Palmer confirmed exclusively to Football League World that he does not feel McNally has a future at Turf Moor following the Clarets’ recent transfer dealings, which has seen the permanent acquisition of Jordan Beyer and the arrival of Darryl O’Shea from West Bromwich Albion.

“Millwall have joined the race to sign Burnley’s Luke McNally,” Palmer reported.

“McNally had a successful loan spell at Coventry last season, where he helped them narrowly miss out on promotion to the Premier League, losing to Luton at Wembley.”

Would Millwall benefit from signing Luke McNally?

McNally would be a fantastic addition to the Lions.

McNally, as Palmer points out, is unlikely to have a future at Burnley with the arrivals of Beyer and O’Shea, while he also faces competition from Hjalmar Ekdal and Ameen Al-Dakhil.

McNally had a successful loan spell at Coventry, demonstrating his abilities at Championship level and helping to one of the division’s strongest defenses.

He was instrumental in helping the Sky Blues reach the play-off final, and that experience might be essential for Millwall as Gary Rowett attempts to mount another promotion drive next season after narrowly missing out on the top six on the final day of the previous campaign.

The Lions will be quite loath to lose Flemming due to his importance to the team, but McNally’s presence would be a consolation, albeit they should insist on a permanent contract rather than a loan.
