Shocking as Newcastle tips to sign 20-years-old Southampton massive defender this summer

Newcastle United are said to have reached a “stalemate” in their pursuit of Southampton youngster Valentino Livramento this summer.

The Saints’ £8,000-a-week right-back has been a significant transfer target for the Magpies in the current transfer window, having impressed since joining from Chelsea in 2021.

Unfortunately, Livramento’s 2022/23 season was cut short due to a cruciate ligament injury, which limited him to just 26 minutes of Premier League play, but he was a regular prior to that, recording 34 appearances for the south coast club.

While it appeared that the Southampton starlet would end up at St James’ Park this summer, competing with Kieran Trippier, a bad update has emerged.

According to The Telegraph‘s Luke Edwards, talks have stalled over Newcastle’s interest in Livramento because of PIF’s tactics of trying to under-sell their budget, throwing doubt over a summer move to St James’ Park:

This is a frustrating update, as Livramento is a highly intriguing young player with a high ceiling who was once lauded by Theo Walcott as having that magical “aura” about them.

The hope is that this is only a hiccup in the discussions and that a solution can be reached, allowing Newcastle to sign a talented English youngster who has five caps for England’s Under-21 team.

Granted, any player who has suffered such a serious knee injury should be viewed with caution, but given his age and the advancement in how fitness setbacks are overcome nowadays, Livramento should return as good as ever, hopefully as Trippier’s long-term replacement and successor at right-back.
