Newcastle are finally back eyeing 25-year-old Leicester City unstoppable midfielder this summer but key problem

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘back in the race’ for Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes this summer, although City’s asking price may be a ‘problem’ for clubs.

Barnes is one of the City players anticipated to go this summer, following the £40 million sale of James Maddison last week. West Ham United, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in him.

According to the Daily Mail, all three teams have ‘enquired’ about Barnes this summer, with Newcastle also ‘back in the race’ for the 25-year-old. West Ham have been the most heavily connected in recent days, with the Hammers expecting a cash inflow from the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal.

According to the report, the price City has placed on Barnes’ head this summer has been a ‘problem’ for the clubs who have inquired thus far. Newcastle will also be aware of the situation.

City is set to ask for a sum equal to the £40 million they received for Maddison. Because Barnes has two years left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, the club is in a stronger negotiation position with him.

Speaking to the press for the first time today, new City manager Enzo Maresca revealed that additional players could be sold between now and the end of the season. “It’s difficult because anything can happen for us and other clubs when the market is open,” he remarked in his first press conference as City manager.

“At the moment, seven players’ contracts have expired, Maddison has left, and it’s possible that some more players will leave.” However, if someone leaves, we can bring in other players.”
