Shocking as Tottenham finally accepts a deal of £17.2m for the world best goalkeeper

Tottenham and Empoli have agreed a deal of £17.2 million for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The 26-year-old is scheduled to arrive in London this weekend for a physical before signing a five-year contract.

Spurs were interested in Brentford’s David Raya but were hesitant to pay the £40 million asking price.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are also optimistic about signing Leicester’s James Maddison, despite the Foxes rejecting a £50 million joint bid for the 26-year-old and teammate Harvey Barnes last week.

Newcastle, who were rumored to be interested in Maddison, have settled on a £55 million deal for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Spurs have been on the look-out for a keeper with Hugo Lloris, who has been at Tottenham since 2012, set to leave the club this summer.

Vicario is part of the Italy squad but has yet to be capped by his country. He impressed for Empoli last season and previously played for the club while on loan from Cagliari.

Maddison meanwhile  has only a year left on his contract, meaning Leicester must sell him this summer to recover a sizeable fee.

Newcastle tried to buy Maddison last year though they are currently focused on signing Italian midfielder Tonali.

On Thursday, sporting director Dan Ashworth and head of recruitment Steve Nickson met with Milan management and Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Rio at the Palazzo Parigi Hotel.

Tonali represented Italy U21s against France in Romania, and his agent is likely to meet with him on Friday to finalize details before any deal is signed and medicals are performed.

Eddie Howe, the club’s manager, has selected the 23-year-old midfielder as his priority summer target.

Tottenham, meantime, are interested in signing a center back, and have set their sights on Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen.

Tottenham have long admired Burkina Faso international Tapsoba, and the 24-year-old is eager to join the club.
