Shocking as Newcastle United spent £10m on a world’s best goalkeeper this summer

Newcastle United invested £10 million on a new player a year ago today.

Following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season, Nick Pope joined the club.

Many fans did not consider a new goalkeeper to be a priority at the moment, as Martin Dubravka was backed up by Karl Darlow.

It was widely agreed that other areas needed to be strengthened first.

Dubravka had been a great performer for the club since joining on loan in 2018, but Howe felt Pope, an England international, would strengthen his team – and the club moved quickly.

“I don’t think anyone’s been given any assurances,” Pope stated. “Of course, everyone wants to play in the first game of the season.” As a squad, it’s about working toward that goal and each player claiming that shirt.

“I believe that applies to all positions.” I believe that rivalry is essential for a successful squad.”

But it came as no surprise when Pope opened the season in goal, and fans immediately realized why Howe was so eager to sign the 31-year-old.
