Leeds has six players competing in this summer’s under-21 Euros, which began this week, but three of the Whites’ young men representing their countries were unused substitutes in Thursday’s 5pm games.
Leo Hjelde and Kristoffer Klaesson had a frustrating evening as both sat on the bench for Norway’s under-21s, who lost 2-1 to Switzerland in their Group D opener after leading in the first half.
Despite returning from a fractured eye socket to start England’s under-21s’ warm-up game against Japan earlier this month, Charlie Cresswell was named to the bench in their Group C opener against the Czech Republic. Instead, James Garner was called up to partner Taylor Harwood-Bellis at center back.
Cresswell, on the other hand, watched as his team got off to a perfect start with a 2-0 victory, with goals from Jacob Ramsey and Emile Smith-Rowe.
