Leeds still in negotiation with Spanish club to sign world-class defender

According to Estadio Deportivo, Real Betis are interested in re-signing Leeds United defender Junior Firpo this summer as they want to reinforce their left-back position.

Firpo appeared in 19 Premier League games for Leeds last season, scoring once and assisting once as the club was demoted from England’s top division.

On 7 June, Fabrizio Romano stated that Firpo wants to leave Leeds United following the team’s relegation in pursuit of a new challenge elsewhere, and that a return to his former club could be on the cards.

According to Estadio Deportivo [9 June], Firpo has already received bids from Europe and has been recognized as a possible alternative for Betis to improve their defense, while the La Liga club is also interested in Marc Roca.

However, Leeds United are unlikely to loan both players, since the Whites are aiming to recoup some monies for a summer reconstruction.

Firpo’s tenure with Leeds United will not be remembered fondly, as he was frequently chastised by fans for his performances on the field.

He couldn’t have had a good time either, as he was unable to secure a starting berth for an extended period of time after arriving from the Camp Nou.

The Dominican Republic international showed flashes of strong form but failed to build on them, as he has done for much of his career at Leeds United.

The Whites will be desperate to relieve some of their players at Elland Road, and Firpo is at the top of the list. Given that his best years were spent at Real Betis, it’s hardly surprising that he’ll try to return there this summer.

The same can be said for Marc Roca, who appears poised to leave Elland Road after a dismal debut season in England, but if Leeds United are to let any of them go, they must ensure they are compensated fairly.

In unrelated Leeds United news, Phil Hay claims that the 49ers takeover will increase the club’s summer budget.
