Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe believes a handful of teams will mount a resurgent Premier League campaign next season.
Following Newcastle United’s fourth-place performance this season, Eddie Howe has issued a caution ahead of next season.
After finishing 11th the previous season, the club is poised for its first Champions League campaign in 20 years, having exceeded all expectations.
However, European football will undoubtedly have an impact on the club’s domestic campaign, and Howe, who expects to add a “small group” of players to his squad this summer, will have to strike a balance between conflicting demands while aiming for another high Premier League finish.
And if last season’s underachievers, especially Liverpool (5th), Tottenham Hotspur (8th), and Chelsea (12th), “come back fighting,” as Howe anticipates, that will be an issue for his overachieving club.
“It’s difficult (to stay in the top four every season), but it’s not impossible,” said United’s head coach. “It’s all about progress; I said the same thing around this time last year.”
People will always look at league position as a gauge, but we take into account a variety of other elements that influence team performance.
“We want to improve, and we need to do so quickly.” Other clubs that may not have had their ideal seasons will fight back.”
‘Positive’ mentality
United, according to Howe, aims to compete in every competition next season.
“We need to go into next season full of optimism and what can be,” Howe said. “We want to compete, and we want to win a trophy.”
