The wait at Elland Road continues for the announcement of Leeds United’s new permanent manager, with the position still vacant following Sam Allardyce’s departure after a brief stint in charge.
The veteran Englishman was the Whites’ final manager after a turbulent season that saw the Yorkshire club relegated after having both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia sacked from the dugout.
With the newly-relegated squad preparing for life in the Championship next season, fans will undoubtedly be hoping for a quick end to the club’s search for a new head coach, as a lengthy search is likely to hamper any early transfer movement.
According to Football Transfers, out-of-work manager Steven Gerrard is already in talks with Leeds. The 43-year-old, who is also being chased by Leicester City, has been out of job since being fired by Aston Villa in October.
While the Englishman’s brief spell at Villa Park, where he won only 13 of his 40 games, may have harmed his reputation, the Liverpool legend’s earlier success at Rangers should delight Leeds fans.
Should Leeds get Gerrard on board?
The former England star excelled in his maiden management post at Ibrox, leading the Old Firm giants to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season after a “incredible season” for the club, according to pundit Alex McLeish.
The Gers went unbeaten throughout the league season, finally ending 25 points ahead of Celtic at the top, putting an end to their opponents’ hopes of an unprecedented tenth consecutive league title.
Having taken over in the summer of 2018, it was evident that the young coach needed time to make his imprint in Glasgow, with McLeish characterizing the methodical build-up to victory as “kind of similar to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.”
That resemblance is accentuated by the fact that the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager, like the German coach, took his time guiding the Anfield club to glory, winning his first piece of silverware – the Champions League – in 2019, just under four years after taking over from Brendan Rodgers.
Since then, the 55-year-old has led the Merseysiders to a Premier League title and a host of domestic titles, establishing himself as “head and shoulders above everyone” – with Pep Guardiola – through his coaching abilities, according to analyst Jamie Redknapp.
It’s worth mentioning that Gerrard, who favours a 4-3-3 formation like Klopp, has been suggested as a potential successor to Klopp in the future, with former colleague Djibril Cisse describing him as a “great leader” and someone he’d “love to see” head the Reds.
In terms of Leeds, Gerrard’s appointment may take time to bear fruit, as it did at Rangers, but the 113-cap star might emulate Klopp’s success in becoming a successful, long-term icon at Elland Road.
